The Holy Martyr Hesychius.
The holy Martyr Hesychius was a man of senatorial rank in the days of Maximian, who reigned from 286 to 305. Maximian gave command that all Christians holding imperial office should either renounce Christ or be stripped of their rank; when he learned that Hesychius had put off his splendid official clothing for poor attire, and was living in poverty with the Christians, he called him before himself and asked him if he were not ashamed to have fallen into such dishonor from the glory he had had before. The Saint answered that the glory he had renounced was temporal, but the glory given by Christ is eternal. The tyrant had a heavy stone tied to his neck, and Hesychius was cast into the Orontes River, in Lower Syria, in the year 302.
