Our Righteous Mother Burgundofara
Our Righteous Mother Burgundofara (or Fara) was the daughter of a nobleman of the court of King Theodebert in seventh century France. Her brother was Saint Faro, who himself became a great monastic light. When she was a child she received a blessing from the great Irish Saint Columban, who was visiting her father’s house, and he made such an impression on her that she decided to serve Christ in virginity, despite the opposition of her father. After much conflict her father agreed and even founded a convent of which she became an abbess. It was later named after her, Faremoutiers (“moutiers” is a corruption of the word for “monastery”), and is mentioned by Bede in Book III, ch. 8 of his History of the English Church and People. He says that when there were as yet few convents England, many virgins of noble birth went across the channel to Faremoutiers to live as nuns.
