The holy Confessor Marcellinus, First Bishop of Embrun in Gaul.
Saint Marcellinus of Embrun was originally from Africa, and came to Rome with two companions, Saints Vincent and Domninus, in the early fourth century, inspired to preach Christ in Gaul, whither he was sent by Saint Eusebius, Bishop of Vercelli, to the town of Embrun (Saint Eusebius was later exiled to Asia Minor for refusing to condemn Saint Athanasius the Great at an Arian council). Through his preaching many pagans believed, a church was built, and Saint Eusebius of Vercelli was asked to come consecrate it. He did, at the same time ordaining Marcellinus first Bishop of Embrun over his objections. As Christmas approached, many catechumens were preparing themselves for Baptism, and they were minded to fill the ancient baptistry with water; but that built by Saint Marcellinus in the new church filled up with clear living waters of itself; this miracle lasted seven days, after which the waters withdrew of themselves. Those who drank of that water were healed of their infirmities. On Holy Saturday of the same year, the miracle repeated itself, and continued to do so yearly. In fact, Saint Gregory of Tours mentioned that the miracle continued in his own day in the seventh century, and Ado, Bishop of Vienne, that it even still continued in the ninth century. Saint Marcellinus was persecuted for the Faith under the Arian Emperor Constantius, and finally spent a number of years in his old age in hiding in mountain caves.
